12 Themed Subtraction Games for Kindergarten That Kids Beg to Play

🎲 The Subtraction Game My Students Beg to Play (All Year Long!)

There are math center games…

And then there are the games your students literally cheer for.

This Roll & Take Away game?
It’s that game.

Every. Single. Time.

Why I Created This Game

If you’re anything like me, subtraction can feel a little… dry.

Some kids get it quickly.
Some need hands-on practice.
Some need to SEE the numbers disappear.

And worksheets?
They just weren’t cutting it.

I needed something:

  • Hands-on

  • Simple to prep

  • Easy to differentiate

  • And engaging enough that my students would actually WANT to practice subtraction

That’s how Roll & Take Away was born.

🍎 One Game. Twelve Themes. Zero Complaints.

The best part?
It’s the SAME game format with 12 different themes:

  • Apples

  • Camping

  • Space

  • Jungle

  • Fairy

  • Pirates

  • Dinosaurs

  • Underwater

  • Mermaid

  • Polar Animals

  • St. Patrick’s Day

  • Insects / Spring

So once students learn how to play…
You never have to reteach directions again.

Just swap the theme.

And suddenly subtraction feels brand new again.

🎲 How My Students Play

There are actually two versions included.

🟣 Game Mat 1: Ten Frame Take Away

Students:

  • Start with 10 counters on a ten frame

  • Roll one die

  • Physically remove that many counters

  • Say and write the equation (10 − ___ = ___)

  • Move their game piece forward

Watching them remove the counters and say the equation out loud?
Chef’s kiss for number sense.

Even my hesitant math learners feel successful.

🔵 Game Mat 2: Compare & Subtract

This one is perfect for students ready for a little more challenge.

They:

  • Roll 2 dice

  • Put the larger number in the pink square

  • Put the smaller number in the blue square

  • Subtract

  • Move forward the difference

It builds comparing skills AND subtraction fluency at the same time.

💛 What I Love Most

It doesn’t feel like “doing subtraction.”

It feels like:

“Can I roll next?”
“I’m almost to finish!”
“I got zero!!”

And the repetition?
They don’t even realize they’re practicing fluency.

📈 The Teacher Win

  • Same directions all year

  • Easy differentiation

  • No complicated prep

  • Math fluency

Aligned with Kindergarten and First Grade standards.
